Abstract

Digital forensics is playing an increasingly important role in investigations and forensic audits. The abundance of digital evidence captured in PCs, mobile devices, email, network file systems, finance and other business systems requires intelligent and efficient capture and mining of large amounts of data to obtain useful evidence.  Digital evidence must always be handled using a forensically sound process that allows the evidence to be admitted in a Court of Law.

Internal auditors are often required to lead internal investigations when fraud or incidents occur in their organizations.  In such situations, auditors have to be responsible and knowledgeable about ensuring the completeness and integrity of digital evidence, and applying appropriate techniques to ensure that potentially useful evidence is not overlooked.  In most cases, internal auditors tend to outsource digital forensic work to experts due to the lack of in-house forensic tools and capabilities but will benefit from having basic knowledge about how these experts work.

This session seeks to provide an insight into how forensic technology specialists conduct their work, including the types of forensic tools, general methodology and approach. We will also discuss trends such as the use of forensic data analysis techniques in pro-active continuous monitoring of financial transactions.
